Bring in an example of portraiture that depicts a regular or unknown person. What is it about this portrait that holds the viewer’s attention? Explain the photographer’s intent, the subject (who they are and the circumstances of their situation). Give a thorough description of the formal aspects of the photo and why you are personally drawn to it.
This portrait of a little girl in the window expresses curiosity. The tones of color in this picure are very simple, which make the flowers she is holding pop and become the focal point. Her facial expression however gives the viewer a sence of mystery and curiosity, as to what she is looking at or thinking about. It is a very well taken portrait, in the sence of depth of field as well as a creative point of view as well. -Nicole Downing
This photo captures the eye because its a very cute little boy who looks dirty and worried. The way his mouth is open almost shows his age and how his hand is going to his mouth is also childish. The photo being black and white adds to the sad and worried emotion you get from looking at the photo. I feel like maybe he's lost and is looking at the photographer for answers. I like how he is facing the light and isn't posing or thinking about what he has to do but he's just acting naturally. - Lauren Cerrato

This portrait is visually appealing to the audience. The girl looks to be in distress and her eyes really sow an emphasis and center for the photo. The lighting is fair and more on her eyes. Her eyes are lightened up and shows a big contrast. I personally am drawn to this picture because it makes me wonder about the enviroment where the portrait was taken. To see what this girl is going through right now to how why she is making the expression she is would help understand the photo better,
many things in this picture holds the viewer's attention. For one thing the color of this girls eyes stand out completely. Another thing is the intensity of her face. You can tell she has a rough life from the clothes she is wearing and that she is not always happy. The photographer took this picture to show people that not everyone lives one way. There are many different kinds of people with many different circumstances. I am drawn to this photo because even though it isnt a model with new clothes, the colors pop and the whole mood you get from looking at the picture just makes you think. - meggieyancich Jan 11, 2012~~Meggie Yancich
This photograph holds the attention of the viewer mainly becuase of the expression on the baby's face. It looks as though the baby is on the verge of tears and this creates interest to the viewer. Because there is no other contex in the photo it leaves the situation the photo was take in up to the viewer. I love the way that the baby's eyes look pleading and it shows the sheer innocence and vulnerability that all babies have. I also love how the photo is kept mainly light with the only realy dark part of the photo being the babies eyes, drawing you into the sad pleading look they hold. Annette Curbow

In this photo, the american flag and army fatigue of the soldier draws the viewer in. The photogrpaher purposley included the flag to show this man and his dedication to our country, and how he will put his l,ife on the line for our country. The blue flag relly stands out against the white backround, an it makes you focus on tyhe patriotic aspect of this potrait.

This photo is of five young girls in their soccer uniforms sitting on the bench. The viewer can see the happiness and joy on their faces even though most of the girls are out of focus. The way the bench is angles in comparison with the camera makes an interesting visual pathway. Also, the photographer created a short depth of field in order to create more interest. This is more than just a picture of girls at their soccer game; it is carefully taken with consideration given to the lighting, focues, and center of focus.
This portrait is of a regular young girl and her peculiar smile. It captures the attention of the viewer because the girl's face fills up the frame of the photograph with her eyes being the focal point, they stand out with all the different hues of colors seen in them. It is backlit with the light coming from behind her face. It shows a selective depth of field because the girl's face in in sharp focus however the background is simply a blur. The photographer wanted to capture the joy and innonence in this girl in one photograph through her eyes. I feel this was accomplished. A visual triangle is created between the girls two eyes down to her mouth and nose and back up again. I am drawn to this picture of a young girl with expressive eyes who looks like she has been in the sun because I think it captures thousands of emotions in a single frame. I also like how it makes the viewer wonder, who is this girl, what is she like, and so on. Sara Reiling This gorgeous photograph is of a woman in Iceland looking in from the freezing cold. The contrast between her weathered look and the lace on the curtain really piqued my interest. There's such a story behind this photograph, but the artist is unknown as well as the story behind it. ~Charlotte Chapin
This picture of a little girl on a swing catches the eye because of the bright colors and happy expression on the girl’s face. It has a very short depth of field, which draws the eye to the girl. The photographer’s intent was to capture the thrill of being a kid and swinging on a swing. It shows the innocence of a little girl having fun. I like how clear and crisp the colors are and how the expression of the girl is fully captured. -Clare Crowell ** This portrait is of a young girl, yet she seems trapped in a much older person's wardrobe. She is dressed up in a chic sweater and her hair is done up. At the same time,
this photo conveys much emotion and it makes you wonder what this child has been through. With her hand propped up against her face, it tells us that she is thinking
and we wonder what. Her eyes are so piercing and directly staring through the camera like she is trying to tell us something. I think this photo is truly beautiful
between this young girl and the story she has to tell, as well as the contrast of her white skin against the black backdrop.

this picture explains alot about the indivdual. it shows his dedication to the job, his personality, and how he presents himself to the general public. Also shows his dedication in protecting and serving the public. I belive the authors intent in this was to show us that police officers are just trying to help us and not be against us. Also he displays the full uniform in tact, the badge and the patches and 2way radio show that he is dedicated to his job and can perform his tasks to the fullest. overall this artist did an excellent job showing us this police officer. randy k
Above is a picture of a little girl. This close-up portrait says a lot about how this little girl feels. She is gazing up at the camera with her big eyes. They express sadness to me. It almost looks like she is helpless and depressed. Her lips are showing blankness. Not a frown or a smile shown on them. The hood on her head also makes the photograph seem gloomier and sad portaying a depressed scene. The photograph is shot in black and white. The contrast in the photo between her eyes and her hair is very strong. Her lips hair, pupil, and backround balance nicely with her skin tone, hood, and eyes. This little girl looks mysterious and depressed. It looks like she has a story behind those eyes. -Cam Corrigan

This is a portrait of young soldier for the US army. This photograph was taken by a friend before he went overseas. I think this picture is interesting because of the contrasting lights and darks, especially on his face. I like how it depicts half of his fight in the light, and the other half covered in shadows. I think this is trying to send a message about war and the effects on soldiers' lives. I also like the soft background which gives a sense of peace or calmness, contrasted agains the look of freight or uncertainty in the soldiers' eyes.

Girl Smoking
In this photo it shows a little girl holding a candy cigarette which catches my attention because obviously kids that young aren’t supposed to smoke, its candy, and she looks very serious and “real” while holding it as if she smokes one casually every day. In this situation it shows how kids can easily copy and manipulate everything they see for example this child’s mother or father probably smokes every day and this is what she sees on a day to day basis. She also captures my attention in her posture and face because even though she is a little girl she holds such an adult posture with such a serious but somewhat scared face.
Lindsey Kinsellagh
This portrait holds the viewers attention because of the little girl. She is focused to be the center of attention and the background is blurred. Also the clearness and focal point of her eyes is something that could keep the viewers attention. The photographer’s intent was to maybe show happiness in childhood no matter where you’re growing up or the life you live. The photographers represent the joy that the subject (little girl) has towards being captured in a picture. This girl may not be growing up in the best place due to the dirt on her head and face but the photo captures all the beautiful things about this little girl without focusing on the dirt and the lack of care she may get. The formal aspects of the photo are the vibrant colors of her dress and the way then blend with her skin tone. I am personally draw to this photo because her smile is infectious and made me smile right away.

This picture to me is eyecatching because of the light colors and the baby is in the center and focal point of the picture. I like the way the photographer wrapped the baby making them look so enclosed and protected. The way the blanket goes over the top of their head makes your eyes move across the picture making you see every angle and aspect of the picture. It is a very simple picture so that the baby is the main focus and not too much is going on in the shot. I think the photographer was trying to show the innocence of the child and this is captured in the way they are looking at the camera and their facial expressions.

The attention is held in the eyes, they are so defined and express so much about what she is feeling. The photographer's intent is to capture this girls emotion fully withing the face and mouth. I was drawt to this photograph mostly because of how disgruntled she looked with the messy hair and shirt kinda falling off and then how intense she looked in the face. The conflicting moods of the photograph were very intriging and makes me ask what is she thinking about

The portrait of this man portrays strength and intimidation. This can be perceived through the squint and tension around the eyes as well as the almost angry expression being exuded. The photographers choice of leaving a blank backdrop and shooting such a close visual was to magnify every blemish and wrinkle within his face exemplifying his journey through life. Also the close angle gives a better opportunity to read the emotions being expressed through the mans facial features. A combination of the rouge cigarette and the rather clean and classic shot draws in viewers because its an aspect that is politically and medically "bad", thus causing viewers to stop and look. I have fallen victim to what the photographer has meticulously used as a focal point and bait for an audience; the cigarette and mouth area are what caused me to choose this photo.
This portrait depicts a young, probably college-aged girl. Her mittens and her bright eyes catch the viewer’s attention because they provide a pop of color to create a focal point against the neutral surrounding colors. The soft lighting from in front of her is very flattering. In this image, the photographer wanted to show the girl naturally, so she is wearing normal outdoor clothing and is not smiling like the subject of a typical portrait. She left her hair relaxed and slightly wavy, showing that she did not take the extra effort to blow-dry or straighten it for a ‘prettier’ photo. The hint of a smile on her lips is meant to catch the viewer’s attention because he or she wonders what the girl is thinking about. I like the picture because the girl is photographed in a natural setting, and she does not look over-posed. The photo piques my interest because it is difficult to decipher her facial expression, so I am left wanting to know more about her, wondering about her thoughts, her likes, and her dislikes. This portrait depicts strength. It Shows a black individual who seems to have gone through extremley hard times. You can tell by the multiple scares all over ther face and just the general look and feeling that you get from the way the picture looks back at you. I believe the intent of this picture was to show power. That the person still has strength to go on and live their life. The darkness of the world is all around them, but the face is lit as if they are determined to keep carrying on.

This portait shows the innocence of the youth. I like this, because it shows how happy and playful everyone was in their
childhood. The viewer would first look at her yellow jacket, and the yellow bubble container, because it is the focal point. I am personally drawn to this photo, because I remember when i was a kid, and had no stress and nothing to worry about in
life. Unfortunately when she grows up, she will see the real world problems and come to reality from all the innocence.

Funny Baby Pictures
This portrait truly captures anger. This baby is pissed, she doesn't even care that she is drooling all over her nice leather couch. I am drawn to this picture because to everyone who is not the baby, this is adorable. Her arched eyebrows and fuzzy pink jacket contrast the expression on her face perfectly. The photographer did a perfect job of catching this family memory. As for the technical aspects, there aren't very many. The baby takes up all of the foreground, and there is almost no contrast, but I chose this picture more for the content then for the composition.

This portarit is nice to look at becasue you wonder what she is looking at. She might be looking at something in the sky. She also stands out against the background because the photo has a short depth of field. Her features remind me of those of a doll. She has a little pocelain face and her hair is clean cut but it creates whisps after being played with. That is why I personally like the photo. This photo was taken with the intent of showing people how to take good portraits, therefore, this photo was well thought out and every detail was intended.

This self portrait is so interesting because it is showing the viewer the man behind the camera. Usually when you look at a picture the only way you see anything about the photographer it is through the message they have left in the picture. This self portrait allows the viewer to see who the photographer actually is instead of relying on trying to figure out the artists message. -Hunter
This is a portrait of an average looking person. What really grabbed my attention in this photograph was the wood panel background. His wrinkled face almost looks like a knot hole in the wood paneling. The photographer’s intent was to show the person being photographed in a completely different way than the way we would view the person. I also love the hi-resolution; it makes the man really “pop”.-Nick Robinson
This image was photographed by Danny Santos II, he had an entire series of "strangers" he would pull people aside off of the street and photograph them. Santos's intent was to depict the beauty of everyday people. He focuses solely on their faces in order for the viewer to have nothing to focus on but the face. What I particularly like about this portrait is the colors, the blue back round contrast well with the girl's red hair. I also love how defined the picture is, you could count the freckles on her face. The lighting in the photo is also very soft and slightly illuminates the left side of her face. The way the light is makes her irises look like two different shades of brown which I think is pretty cool. Shelby Doolity

I chose this portrait because it is clear that there is a message behind it. The girl's eyes are looking up as if shes trying to find insight into something. Her mouth makes it clear that she is not necessarily happy. Her red hair is extremely long, going off the border of the portrait, as if it grows with her search for insight. Her light blue eyes convey her innocence and hope. She is wearing a black shirt and against a black background, these could symbolize the dark parts of her life that she needs to improve.

I like this portrait because of the subject's ambiguity. The man's face is not in focus, and the only facial feature recognizable is his beard. The focal point of the photo is the cross tattoo on his right hand. The photo's circumstances are unknown but it's tone is silent and reflective.I like the photo because it makes a statement about the subject without saying much at all.
This is a photo of an unknown firefighter after the 9/11 attacks. All the wreckage around this fireman grabs the viewers attention because they next see the mourning fireman. The photographer wanted to capture the essence of how 9/11 not only affected citizens of the U.S, it affected fellow firefighters as well. The subject of this photo is clearly the lonesome firefighter, showing the remainder of the buildings scattered around him. I was drawn to this photo because of the patriotism and pride i get when i see this photo.
